Happy Friday, although time itself is turning out to be completely meaningless in my opinion. Is music alone enough to save us? Let’s find out:
Soup (Remi Wolf) | Apple Music
I really wrote this whole email to deliver the word of God to you directly (Remi Wolf’s new album)—I am just the vehicle through which you will listen to potentially the best song of the year. In some ways that makes me Jesus, but I would never say that. This song came out yesterday before the full album dropped today and I think I’ve listened to it 50+ times since then—it’s 3:33 minutes and that’s my lucky number. I don’t know how Remi and her long-time producer Solomonophonic (Jared Solomon) pack so much heavy emotion into a song that makes you want to dance like Hannah/Marnie in that one episode of Girls, but they created musical perfection. I never thought I’d scream the words “I’ll go and pick up the soup” but I’m better for it and maybe it’s not actually a brat summer, it’s a soup summer (copyright). As I say every time I mention Remi Wolf, she went to my high school, as if that means anything about my own talent or potential. Jesus would love this song probably!
Better Than Nothing (Ray Bull) | Apple Music
Thank you again Spotify recommendations… you know me better than I know myself (barely at all). I’m considering sharing my suggested songs list with my therapist to get a sense of what’s going on. Last time I said I was sad in one of these emails my mom called me and she was Very Concerned! Anyway, listening to this song makes me feel like I was one of the cool kids in high school—I wasn’t but I was so so close, third maybe fourth tier. I was the captain of the dance team but it wasn’t cool at the time. REMI WOLF WENT TO MY HIGH SCHOOL! Anyway again, the way the duo sings “it’s better than nothing” at 0:59 is addicting. They have a show on Wednesday (7/17) and I will be there if anyone is in town and wants to join me.
Rocket to Ride (Jess Locke) | Apple Music
Australian artist Jess Locke released a great album back in May with a lot of unique songs, I don’t remember how I found her but I’ve been sitting with this song a lot recently—she gives me Julia Jacklin vibes (that is the nicest thing you can say about someone BTW). Today I looked up her producer for this song (Rob Muinos) and of course, he is also Julia Jacklin’s producer. I love how small the world is sometimes. Perhaps I actually discovered her by searching through his tracks a while ago, I have a bad memory. Have I said that before? Other songs I love on her album: Piece Of It, Uncomfortably Happy, Take It Back.
Bonus Playlists:
There’s a lot of good music discovery happening at the moment and I can’t write about all of it, I have a job not to brag, but here is a fun summer playlist if you’re having a great summer (HAGS) and here is another playlist if you are ridden with anxiety and can’t enjoy happier music. If the later, let’s get drinks!
HAGS,
Lydia
All the songs I’ve written about exist on this Spotify playlist if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
